Gardeners Brondesbury Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Brondesbury is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, subcontractors, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening services. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with garden maintenance, landscaping and related outdoor work.
Our goal is to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures. Health and Safety is a core part of how we plan and deliver every project, from small domestic gardens to larger communal and commercial outdoor spaces.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Brondesbury accepts overall responsibility for Health and Safety. We will provide clear leadership, adequate resources and appropriate supervision to ensure that safe systems of work are developed, implemented and regularly reviewed.
We will ensure that risk assessments are carried out for our gardening activities, including but not limited to lawn care, planting, pruning, hedge cutting, tree work within our competence, use of machinery, application of garden products and removal of green waste. Where specialist work is required, we will engage competent contractors and ensure that their Health and Safety standards are suitable.
We are committed to complying with relevant Health and Safety legislation and recognised industry guidance relating to gardening, landscaping and outdoor work. This includes monitoring changes in best practice and updating our procedures accordingly.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee and subcontractor working on behalf of Gardeners Brondesbury has a duty to take reasonable care of their own Health and Safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff must:
Follow the training, instructions and safe working procedures provided.
Use equipment, tools and personal protective equipment correctly and for their intended purpose.
Report accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards or defective equipment without delay.
Cooperate with the company to ensure compliance with this policy and any site-specific rules.
Never engage in horseplay, misuse equipment or undertake tasks for which they are not trained or authorised.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting work at a garden or site, we will assess the environment and tasks to identify potential hazards. These may include uneven ground, slopes, steps, water features, overhead and underground services, traffic, public access, weather conditions and the presence of children or animals.
Based on this assessment, we will establish safe systems of work to control identified risks. This can involve selecting appropriate tools and machinery, defining exclusion zones, using barriers or signage where required, planning manual handling tasks, and adjusting work practices in adverse weather such as heavy rain, high winds or extreme heat.
Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically and when there are significant changes to our activities, equipment or work locations.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
Gardeners Brondesbury will ensure that all tools and machinery used in our gardening operations are suitable for the task, properly maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. This includes lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers and other powered or hand tools.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered machinery. Pre-use checks will be carried out, and any defects or concerns must be reported immediately so that the equipment can be taken out of service until it is repaired or replaced.
We will provide and enforce the use of appropriate personal protective equipment, which may include gloves, safety footwear, eye and ear protection, high visibility clothing and respiratory protection where necessary.
Substances, Chemicals and Garden Products
Where our work involves the use of substances such as fuels, oils, fertilisers, weed control products or cleaning agents, we will handle and store them safely in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant regulations.
We will assess the risks associated with each product and implement appropriate controls, such as using correct application methods, wearing specified protective equipment, avoiding contamination of watercourses and preventing access by children, pets or wildlife until it is safe.
Containers will be clearly labelled, and substances will be transported and disposed of responsibly to minimise any risk to health or the environment.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening and landscaping often involve lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. Gardeners Brondesbury is committed to reducing the risk of manual handling injuries by planning work to avoid unnecessary lifting, using mechanical aids where practicable and encouraging team lifting for heavy or awkward loads.
Employees will receive guidance on safe lifting techniques and posture, and we will rotate tasks where possible to minimise strain and fatigue. Staff are encouraged to report any discomfort or signs of musculoskeletal issues so that adjustments can be made.
Public and Client Safety
We recognise our responsibility to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and passers-by from risks arising from our gardening operations. Measures may include temporarily restricting access to work areas, using warning signs, managing vehicle movements carefully and scheduling higher risk activities at quieter times.
Tools and materials will be stored safely when not in use to prevent trips, falls or unauthorised access, particularly where children or animals are present. We will keep work areas as tidy as reasonably practicable and remove waste promptly.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Brondesbury will provide appropriate Health and Safety induction and task-specific training to all employees and, where relevant, to subcontractors. This training will cover safe use of equipment, hazard awareness, emergency procedures and the specific risks associated with gardening work.
Supervisors will monitor working practices to ensure procedures are followed and will provide additional coaching or refresher training where needed. Health and Safety information will be communicated clearly and in a way that is understandable to all team members.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, incidents and near misses that occur during our gardening activities must be reported as soon as possible. We will investigate these events to identify underlying causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
First aid provisions appropriate to the nature of our work will be maintained, and staff will be informed of the location of first aid supplies. Emergency procedures will be established for incidents such as serious injury, fire, contact with hazardous substances or adverse weather, and staff will be briefed on their roles.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals, or sooner if there are significant changes in our operations or relevant legislation.
We encourage feedback from employees, clients and other stakeholders on Health and Safety matters. Lessons learned from incidents, inspections and audits will be used to improve our procedures and reinforce a positive Health and Safety culture throughout Gardeners Brondesbury.
By working together and following this policy, we aim to ensure that gardening and landscaping services are delivered safely, responsibly and with respect for the wellbeing of everyone involved.
